Howard Math Department to Offer Data Science Program Leading to Bachelor of Science in Data Science

Howard Math Department is to set to begin offering a data science program in 2026 leading to the degree of Bachelor of Science in Data Science. The data science curriculum spans foundational Mathematics and Statistics, applied computation, data management, curation and visualization, communication and ethics. Students will engage in experiential learning through internships, capstone projects and interdisciplinary collaborations.

Howard to Host Spring 2024 AMS Sectional Meeting

The Howard mathematics department is very excited to host the Spring Eastern Sectional Meeting of the American Mathematical Society (AMS) on April 6-7, 2024. Highlights of the Howard AMS meeting include over 40 Special Sessions, three Invited Addresses, and the Einstein Public Lecture in Mathematics. The Invited Addresses will be delivered by Ryan Hynd (University of Maryland), Jinyoung Park (New York University), and Jian Song (Rutgers University). The Einstein Public Lecture will be delivered by Talitha Washington (Clark Atlanta University), formerly a Howard math faculty member.

Howard University SIAM Student Chapter

We are excited to announce the renewal of Howard University SIAM Student Chapter, dedicated to promoting industrial and applied mathematics on our campus. It will provide a platform for Howard students to engage with each other, with faculty, and with the larger mathematical community. Our SIAM chapter brings together students from various disciplines, encouraging interdisciplinary collaboration that reaches beyond mathematics.

Dr. Katharine Gurski receives NSF and CURM grants

Dr. Katharine Gurski is the recent recipient of two grants: one from NSF to develop models of the spread of HIV, and the other from CURM (Center for Undergraduate Research in Mathematics) that sponsors undergraduate research on that subject.

Professor Emeritus James Donaldson, a former Chair of the Department of Mathematics and former Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences at Howard, received the 2019 Mathematics Alumni Award for Outstanding Professional Achievement from the University of Illinois.
